Lavoslav (Leopold) Ružička

Lavoslav (Leopold) Ružička (13 September, 1887 – 26 September, 1976) was a Croatian scientist born in Vukovar and winner of the 1939 Nobel Prize in Cehemistry who worked most of his life in Switzerland. He received eight honoris causa doctorates in science, medicine, and law; seven prizes and medals; and twenty-four honorary memberships in chemical, biochemical, and other scientific societies. With colleagues he has published 583 scientific papers, mostly in the period 1930 – 1950. Although he received Swiss citizenship, he considered Croatia sa his homeland and has helped many Croatian chemists. He died in the Swiss town Mammern on 26 September, 1976.
