Dubrovnik’s attitude towards the health of its population was very progressive. Form a very early date Dubrovnik had its own city doctor. Between the year of 1280, when the first doctor is mentioned, and 1808, the year of the fall of Dubrovnik Republic, the names of some 230 doctors were recorded. Free medical attention was the right of anyone living on the territory of Dubrovnik Republic. The doctors were salaried by the Republic and were obliged to accept and treat anyone who came to them.
